Sauna vs Steam Room: A Straight Answer From Someone Who Sells Both

The short version. A sauna is dry heat — 150–195°F at 10–20% humidity, wood-lined, and it can go in a garage, a spare room or your back yard. A steam room is wet heat — 110–120°F at close to 100% humidity, sealed in tile or glass, and it has to live inside your bathroom. For a home, saunas are usually easier and cheaper to install. Steam is the one people choose when their reason is breathing.

That's the answer. The rest of this is how to decide which one is right for your house, and what each one really costs once it's installed.


I sell both. I also sell cold plunge tubs. So I don't have a dog in this fight — I'd rather you buy the one you'll use in five years than the one with the better price this week.

Most articles on this question are written for someone at a gym choosing between two doors. That's a fine question and it takes about ninety seconds to answer. The harder question — the one I get on the phone — is "which one should I put in my house?" Different question, different answer, and almost nobody writes about it honestly, because most of the people writing sell only one of the two.

The temperature numbers surprise people. A steam room feels hotter than a sauna while being 50–70 degrees cooler, because 100% humidity stops sweat evaporating, and evaporation is how your body sheds heat. Same reason 85°F in New Orleans flattens you and 85°F in Phoenix doesn't.

The question the other guides skip: which one can you actually install?

This is where the home decision gets made, and it is not close.

A sauna is a piece of furniture. Indoor kits arrive flat-packed and assemble in a few hours with two people. Many infrared models run on a standard 120V household outlet — no electrician. Traditional saunas need a 240V circuit for the heater, which is one visit from an electrician. Nothing about your house has to change. If you move, some of them come apart and go with you.

A steam room is a building project. Steam at 100% humidity doesn't just get things wet — it drives vapor into your walls. That means vapor-proofing, which is a real step beyond ordinary waterproofing: a sealed enclosure, a sloped ceiling so condensation runs off instead of dripping on your head, a glass door to the ceiling, tile rated for it, and a generator sited within a set distance of the steam head with its own drain and 240V feed.

A general contractor put it bluntly on Houzz last year:

"They have very specific construction requirements for framing, plumbing, electrical, glass enclosure, lighting, tile choice, etc. All has to be vapor proof, which is a huge step up from waterproofing. And 8/10 'tile guys' in most markets don't even waterproof correctly."

That's not a scare story, it's the actual failure rate as the trade describes it. Search any home forum for steam showers and you'll find the same handful of problems on repeat: generators sized too small for the room, steam lines a contractor never insulated, placements a building inspector rejected, and mold in a shower that can't dry out.

There's a third path most people never hear about, and it's the one that makes steam workable in an ordinary house: an all-in-one steam shower — a self-contained enclosure with the generator, controls, glass and drain built in. It arrives as one unit, needs a 240V circuit and a drain connection, and installs in about a day. No tile, no vapor barrier, no six-week bathroom demolition.

You'll meet contractors who insist this product doesn't exist, or that it's junk. It exists — I ship them. One warning that costs people real money: not every sauna includes its heater. Sunray and Golden Designs cabins ship with the Harvia stove included. The thing nobody selling these will tell you

Here's the part I'd want to know if I were spending the money.

Most home steam rooms don't get used. Not "some." Most. And the people saying so are the ones who install them:

  • A general contractor: "No one uses them every day. Few people use them weekly. Most use them every couple of months, if at all."
  • A builder, on the custom route: "Add 12-28K to the standard 10K shower redo. And then never use it."
  • An interior designer who has installed eight of them: "2 are still used, the rest a real novelty for about a month then rarely if ever."
  • An owner, twenty years in: "Wife used the steam feature a few times during the first year. I've never used the steam feature. It is now just a very expensive regular shower."

All four are public, on the same discussion thread, from January and November 2025. I went through several hundred more accounts like these for a separate post on who ends up using theirs and who doesn't.

I'm not telling you this to talk you out of steam. I'm telling you because it changes what the smart purchase looks like. If there's a real chance you won't use it, the worst possible move is the $30,000 tiled version — that's the one that becomes a monument. The all-in-one unit at $2,596–$5,490 is the same experience at a fraction of the commitment, and if the steam function ends up unused you still own a good shower rather than a very expensive regret.

Saunas fare better on this, in my experience and in what people report — partly because a sauna is a destination you walk to, not a fixture you walk past on the way to brushing your teeth. One person on that thread: "We got a kit for about $8,000 - can hold six people. We use it about four times a week."

And the single best piece of advice in the whole thread came from a woman who'd already made the mistake: go use both at a gym or a hotel first. She wrote, "I thought I would love a steam shower but I get really claustrophobic in it. I should have tried one at the gym first." A $30 day pass is the cheapest research you will ever do on a five-figure decision. Do that before you call me.

What the health evidence actually supports — and what's nonsense

I'll be careful here, because this is where the category lies to people.

What's reasonably supported:

  • Breathing is why people buy steam. The trials don't back the medical version of that. When I read several hundred owner accounts, congestion was the number one reason behind people using theirs every day for years. The research says something different: a 2016 trial of 871 adults found that advice to use steam inhalation for sinus symptoms "was not effective," and a 2017 Cochrane review found no benefit and no harm for colds. So warm, humid air feels good on a stuffed-up nose, owners say so constantly, and it isn't a treatment. The long version, with every study, is in a separate post.
  • Sauna heat has the stronger cardiovascular research behind it. The study everyone cites is Finnish: 2,315 men followed for about twenty years, published in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2015, which found more frequent sauna use went with lower cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Went with, not caused. And the authors say in the paper that the result can't be applied directly to steam rooms.
  • Both help you feel less sore and more relaxed after training. Perceived recovery is a real, measurable outcome even where the mechanism is argued about.

What is not true, no matter how many pages say it:

  • Neither one "detoxes" you. Sweat is mostly water and salt, with traces of everything else. Your liver and kidneys handle detoxification; a hot room does not assist them.
  • Neither one burns meaningful fat. You will weigh less stepping out. That is water, and it comes back the moment you drink. Any page telling you how many pounds you can "sweat off" is selling something.
  • Neither is a treatment for a medical condition. If you have a respiratory or heart condition, the person to ask is your doctor, not a retailer. I sell enclosures that make hot air. That's the honest description of the product.

The most-cited version of the difference — sauna leaning cardiovascular, steam leaning respiratory — is a reasonable rule of thumb. It's also a much smaller difference than the internet suggests. If you enjoy one and not the other, use the one you enjoy. Adherence beats optimization every time.

Who shouldn't use either

Almost nobody publishes this section. It matters more than the benefits list.

Talk to your doctor first if you are pregnant, have heart disease or unstable blood pressure, take medication affecting blood pressure or sweating, or have had a fainting episode in heat. Don't use either after drinking alcohol. Don't use either alone if you've never done it before. Get out when you feel unwell rather than finishing the session you planned — nobody gets a prize for twenty minutes.

Heat is a real physiological load. That's precisely why it does anything at all, and precisely why it isn't for everyone.

Can you have both?

Yes, and if you're building anything it's worth thinking about early.

The tidy version in a normal house: an all-in-one steam shower in the bathroom and a sauna in the garage, basement or back yard. They don't compete for the same square footage, and only one of them requires the bathroom.

What generally doesn't work is trying to make one room do both — steam wants a sealed, tiled, humid box; a sauna wants dry wood. Combining them well is a commercial-spa problem, not a home-remodel one.

If you want the full circuit, add a cold plunge. Hot-then-cold is the part regular users get genuinely attached to, and a plunge starts at $590 — an order of magnitude below either heat option.

How I'd actually decide

Get a sauna if: you have a garage, basement, spare corner or back yard · you want the simplest installation · you like dry heat · you want to spend under $2,500 (go infrared) · your reason is recovery, relaxation, or a winter ritual.

Get an all-in-one steam shower if: the bathroom is the only space you have · your reason is congestion, sinuses, or dry winter air · you're replacing a shower anyway · you want steam without the construction project.

Build a custom steam room if: you're already gutting the bathroom, you have an elite tile contractor you trust, and you have used steam enough to know you'll use it. All three. Not two of three.

Do nothing yet if: you've never actually used either one. Go find a gym with both, spend twenty minutes in each, and see which door you want to open again next week.
