View full detailsPutting a sauna in the backyard is a bigger decision than it looks from a product photo. Most people who write to me are stuck on the same three things: which type and size they actually want, what the electrical is going to cost, and how a crate that size gets from a truck to their yard.
Let me answer those here. You can email me directly if you'd like more.
I carry 70 outdoor saunas, from $3,790 to $24,900. Most people land between $5,000 and $8,000. Shipping is free on all of them. Some include a heater and some don't — more on that below, because it changes which one is actually cheaper.
Traditional is the stove, the pile of stones, and water you pour yourself. It's the real Finnish thing, it runs 160–190°F, and it's what most people picture. A 6kW traditional heater needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit run to wherever the sauna sits.
Infrared warms you rather than the air. It runs cooler, and it draws less power — which outdoors is often the whole point.
Hybrid does both. Golden Designs' Carinthia, Gargellen and Nora run full-spectrum infrared or traditional heat in the same cabin, so you're not committing to one before you know which you prefer.
I stock all three, which is unusual — most outdoor sauna sellers are traditional-only.
If you already know traditional sauna and you like it, that's what I'd steer you toward, and if your yard has power out there it's straightforward. If infrared is what you've experienced and enjoyed, it's a genuinely good answer rather than a compromise. And if you honestly don't know — that's what the hybrids are for. Talk to me before you pick a model rather than after; it's a five-minute conversation that saves a lot of second-guessing.
There isn't a best one. The best outdoor sauna is the one you actually like looking at and sitting in — that's not a dodge, it's the truth. Some people love a barrel and some people can't warm to them. Cubes are beautiful. It's as much an aesthetic decision as a technical one, and you're going to see this thing out the window every day.
Barrel — the most common, and the least expensive way into a real traditional sauna. The round shape heats fast because there's less air to warm. 24 of mine are barrels.
Cabin — a small building. More headroom, more bench space, and it reads as part of the property rather than parked on it. Costs more and usually wants a prepared foundation.
Cube and modern — clean lines, flat or shed roofs, the ones that look like architecture. If the sauna is going somewhere you'll see it constantly, this is often what people end up wanting.
Canopy and porch styles — a barrel or cabin with a covered area outside the door. Worth it in a climate where you'll want somewhere to cool down that isn't the lawn.
Most of my customers aren't buying a sauna. They're buying twenty minutes a day that belongs to them. But when they research it, three things come up, so let me be straight about what the evidence actually says.
The heart research is the strongest of it. Long-running Finnish cohort studies found meaningfully lower cardiovascular mortality among people who used a sauna four to seven times a week versus once — summarized well by Stanford Lifestyle Medicine and reviewed in the clinical literature. Two honest caveats I'd rather give you than have you find later: these are observational studies, not proof that the sauna caused it, and they studied traditional Finnish sauna, not infrared. I'm not going to tell you a sauna prevents heart disease. I'll tell you the research exists and let you read it.
Recovery is the one I hear about most from people who train. Heat after a hard session, the same way people use a hot tub, and it's the fastest-growing reason people come to me.
And the ordinary one: it's warm, it's quiet, there's no phone in there, and it's the same twenty minutes every day. Most people who love their sauna talk about that part, not the studies.
Roughly as many people search for saunas and cold plunges together as search for either alone, and it's the single most common thing customers ask me to add.
I carry 27 cold plunge tubs, from $899 for an inflatable to $6,499 for a stainless CUBOID, plus the chillers that keep them cold year-round ($2,699–$3,499). If you're putting a sauna in the yard, running the plunge off the same pad and the same electrical run is much cheaper than doing it twice — so it's worth deciding now even if you buy the plunge later. Tell me if that's the plan and I'll make sure the site prep covers both.
The pad. A sauna wants a flat, solid, level base — concrete, pavers, or a deck rated for the weight. Gravel works for most barrels. It shouldn't sit directly on soft ground, because that's how a door stops closing squarely two winters later. Leave some air underneath so water can flow away and the underside can dry — that's what prevents rot and mold.
The power. A traditional outdoor sauna almost always needs a dedicated 240V circuit. The exact breaker and wire size depends on the heater, and it's listed on each product page and in the manufacturer's manual — I won't guess at it here, because getting it wrong is expensive. Send me the model you're considering and the distance from your panel and I'll read the spec sheet with you.
The delivery. These come by freight, not parcel. The driver brings it to the curb — not around the back, not into the yard. Plan for two or three people and a way to move a heavy crate. Inspect it before you sign anything. If something's damaged and you've signed clean, the claim gets much harder, and I'd rather you called me from the driveway than after the truck leaves.
Golden Designs, SaunaLife, Sunray and Dundalk's Canadian Timber line.
One thing worth knowing before you compare prices: some of these ship with a heater and some don't. Golden Designs and several of the Sunray models come with one — usually a Harvia. SaunaLife and Dundalk are sold as the room, and the stove is separate — budget roughly $1,200 to $3,000 all-in, depending on size and whether the heater has built-in controls.
That matters because it's easy to line two of them up and pick the wrong one. A SaunaLife at $4,390 looks cheaper than a Golden Designs at $4,999 right up until you add the heater, at which point it isn't. I'd rather tell you that here than have you find out at checkout.
So compare all-in, not by sticker. If you tell me the two you're weighing up, I'll price both complete — heater, stones, controls, delivery — and send you the real numbers side by side. That's a five-minute job for me and it's the single most useful thing I can do before you buy.
I also stock HUUM and Homecraft heaters separately, if you're replacing one or specifying your own. If you're comparing against something I don't stock, tell me what it is — I'll give you a straight answer about whether it's better, including when it is.
Is an outdoor sauna worth it?
It's worth it if you'll use it, and the people who use theirs are the ones who put it close to the house. The best predictor I've seen of a sauna that gets used three times a week instead of three times a year is a short walk in winter. Put it 40 feet down the garden and be honest with yourself about February.
Which outdoor sauna should I get?
Whichever one you like. I mean that — the shape you find beautiful is the shape you'll use. If you want a starting point: a 2–4 person barrel with a 6kW heater, around $4,500–$6,000, is the least expensive way into a genuine traditional sauna and needs the least site prep. Go to a cabin if you want to stand up straight or host more than four. Go modern if you'll be looking at it every day and that matters to you. Tell me your space and what you're drawn to and I'll narrow it down.
What does an outdoor sauna cost?
Mine run $3,790 to $24,900, and most people spend $5,000 to $8,000. Budget separately for the electrical — running a new 240V circuit to the back of a property commonly runs $800 to $1,500 depending on distance and whether your panel has room. That's the number people forget, so I'd rather say it now.
What does it take to maintain?
Less than you'd think. Wipe the benches down after use, hose the exterior a couple of times a year, and check the stones annually for cracking — replace them when they start crumbling. If yours is untreated cedar or spruce, stain the outside. That's the difference between a sauna that looks good in year eight and one that doesn't.
Can I build it myself?
Usually, yes. Most saunas ship modular and go together relatively easily — a barrel is two people and an afternoon with ordinary tools. Cabins are sometimes more work, and the largest ones are worth hiring out. The electrical hookup should be done by a licensed electrician regardless of how handy you are, and in most places it legally has to be.
How long will it last?
Fifteen to twenty years is normal for a well-sited, stained and maintained outdoor sauna, and heaters typically get replaced once in that time. The thing that kills them early is standing water — bad pad, bad drainage, or a roof that was never sealed.
Still deciding? Call or text me directly at 917-334-6022, or email tim@modernsaunaspa.com. It comes to me, not a support queue. Tell me your space, your climate, and whether you have power out there, and I'll tell you what I'd put in that yard.

I was considering several different models and he took the time to understand my needs and help me choose the perfect one for my lifestyle. He was incredibly patient, answered all of my questions and never made me feel rushed. The sauna is exactly what I wanted and fits perfectly in the space I had planned. I highly recommend Tim, his customer service was awesome.
I just wanted to let you know just how much it mattered to us to have a company that actually cares about the buyers, someone who goes above and beyond to make the process smooth and favorable all the way through to taking your first shower! This is actually our 3rd shower install and our 1st MESA steam shower. We purchased the WS-802L and love it. Having videos of the installation process on YouTube was very helpful also.
I panicked when I realized that I initially purchased the wrong configuration. I immediately called and you were able to literally stop it from going out the door and you fixed my problem. (That would not have happened with the other 2 showers from another company). I'm writing this as a testament to the awesome company standards that Modern Sauna Spa has. It was a pleasure working with you!
We absolutely love this shower. Looks amazing and works great. Front step was a little short but we added a platform mat to extend the threshold which is perfect. The steam is incredible and we use it every single day.
Assembly required some patience and a licensed electrician, but once it is in — wow. The end product is absolutely stunning. Our bathroom looks like a high-end spa. The steam, the rainfall head, the chromotherapy lighting, the radio — everything works beautifully. Use has been terrific.
This is actually the second steam shower we have purchased — we liked the first one so much we bought another for our lake home. The steamer heats up quickly, puts out lots of steam, and the bench seat is comfortable. Had one small issue with a missing part but it was shipped out the next day. Excellent customer service.

They delivered what I ordered and expected in good condition. This is a very beautiful thermometer for the sauna. It has been much easier for me to check and make sure that the temperature is what I desire before getting in.
Super awesome communication and very happy with our purchase. 10/10 would recommend!
