Himalayan Salt Walls & Light Features

Backlit Himalayan salt is the part of a sauna people photograph. The brick throws a warm amber glow across the room, and it turns a cedar box into somewhere you want to sit for another ten minutes.

This is the PROSAUNAS salt range: genuine Himalayan salt brick from the Kherwa mines, in pink or white, mounted on corrosion-resistant metal channel that slides together and stands against your wall instead of being fixed to it. Four products, from a 4 inch accent strip at $346 up to a 96 inch full wall at $8,393.

Which salt feature fits

Himalayan Salt Wall is the full wall: 48 inches wide in four heights (60, 72, 84 and 96 inches), so one wall of a typical sauna is a single kit.

Large Salt Light Feature is a panel rather than a whole wall, in 24, 36 and 48 inch heights. It sits behind a bench, beside a door, or as a band down one side, and it is the answer when a full wall is more than the room or the budget wants.

Small Salt Light Feature is an accent in 4 or 12 inch heights: a glowing band at bench height, a niche, a strip beside the door. It is also the cheapest way to find out whether you like salt in a sauna before committing to a wall.

Universal Salt Light Kit is the salt light on its own, with a white LED strip, in 4, 12 and 16 inch heights. It is the flexible option for an opening that is not a standard height and the simplest thing to retrofit into a room that is already built.

Choosing the lighting

Himalayan salt barely glows by itself. Without light behind it you get the texture and the colour, not the lantern effect.

White LED is the one most people want, and the one to pick if you are unsure. RGB colour LED adds full-range colour from a handheld remote or the app, which is worth it if the sauna doubles as a feature in the room. No lighting is just the brick and channel, for a room that already has a light that will wash the wall.

Building it in

The assembly stands against the wall, so it leaves the structure alone and leaves you access behind the salt. Build it against thermally-treated sauna wood where you can, which is what PROSAUNAS recommends. It is a DIY job, and the channel and light strip can both be trimmed to an odd-sized opening.

Not sure which size or lighting? Send me the wall dimensions and what the room already has, and I will tell you which kit fits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the salt need to be fixed to my sauna wall?
No. The bricks slide onto corrosion-resistant metal channel that stands against the wall rather than being fastened through it. That keeps the wall sound and leaves you room to get behind the salt, which matters because salt and trapped moisture do not mix.

Which lighting should I choose?
White LED if you are unsure. It gives the warm amber glow you see in photographs, because the colour comes from the salt rather than the lamp. RGB is for a sauna that doubles as a feature in the room. No lighting is for a room where you already have a light that will wash the wall or you want to run your own strip.

What do I need to buy besides the salt?
Nothing on the lit versions. The driver, the handheld RF remote and app control are all included, and there is no version where you get the app but not the remote.

Can I install it myself?
Yes. The bricks slide onto the channel, so it is a DIY job rather than a trade one. Both the channel and the light strip can be cut, so a width that is not exactly 48 inches can be trimmed to fit.

What should I build it against?
Thermally-treated wood where you can, which is what PROSAUNAS recommends. It moves least when the room swings between dry and hot and humid. The sauna wood collection carries thermo-treated aspen and spruce.

How tall will the salt actually be once it is built?
The nominal height is what PROSAUNAS and Bathing Brands call it. The assembled height, with the mounting channel in, is a little taller, and that is the number to check against your ceiling. Both are listed on every product page.
